AI Snack Time

Microsoft Bing Copilot has falsely described a German journalist as a child molester, an escapee from a psychiatric institution, and a fraudster who preys on widows.

Microsoft (MSFT) says more of its customers are signing up for and using its generative AI-based Copilot software in a sign that its AI investments are beginning to pay off.

And according to Jared Spataro, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of AI at work, the company is seeing sizable gains in usage of its Copilot for Microsoft 365.

“Last quarter, the number of Copilot for [Microsoft 365] customers increased by more than 60%, which is great because we were already off to the races with that,” Spataro told Yahoo Finance.

“Daily users more than doubled, and we love that trend. When we start to see that type of intensity of usage doubling, it means that you're really onto something,” added Spataro.

Details have emerged about a now-patched vulnerability in Microsoft 365 Copilot that could enable the theft of sensitive user information using a technique called ASCII smuggling.

"ASCII Smuggling is a novel technique that uses special Unicode characters that mirror ASCII but are actually not visible in the user interface," security researcher Johann Rehberger said.

"This means that an attacker can have the [large language model] render, to the user, invisible data, and embed them within clickable hyperlinks. This technique basically stages the data for exfiltration!"
